And that's a wrap at National Conference of State Legislatures in Louisville, KY! We thank all of the interested legislators and other stakeholders who visited with our team this week (from left, David Bielawski, Owen McShane, and Brian Zimmer).We were particularly excited to hear the interest in DSA's ID Security Campaign -- aka #nofakeids campaign (our flyer is pictured below). Several booth visitors asked for more information about incorporating DSA's public awareness program in their state, agency, or organization. We'll sure be busy with follow-ups in the next week or so.We also saw a flurry of interest in DSA's mission to secure critical documents, which is so important for public safety – and for saving millions of dollars of taxpayer's money in fraudulent criminal activity. Congratulations to Dave Spiers and the U.S. Government Publishing Office on this new appointment! It looks like the unit will be in good hands:"Spiers joined GPO in 2008 as the first manager of GPO’s Secure Production Facility located at NASA’s Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. This was the first time a U.S. passport had been made outside GPO’s Secure Production Facility in Washington, DC. Just a few years after opening Stennis, Spiers led the beginning of GPO smart card production at the facility and increased Stennis’s scope of work for passports. As Site Manager at Stennis, Spiers created the first employee-led safety committee in GPO history and implemented the SID Key Performance Indicator (KPI) process to measure performance at the facility. In its second year of operation, the Stennis Secure Production Facility was awarded ISO-9001 Certification, which certifies GPO’s passport operations for meeting a high standard of excellence. Spiers was integral in GPO’s transition from the production of the ePassport to the production of the Next Generation Passport in 2015. More information is emerging about the impact of #fakeids and fraud for auto dealers. Two recent articles from Experian and IDScan.net (who are each notably also promoting their verification services) still offer some sobering takeaways and statistics about how the use of counterfeit paperwork contributes to very costly fraud.From Experian:"The perpetrators of fraud come in all shapes and sizes. While classic ID theft with stolen documents still exists, the real menace lies in synthetic identities: Frankenstein accounts cobbled together from stolen data and fake documents. These sophisticated creations can fool even the most vigilant dealership, resulting in high-value car loans taken out on non-existent people."https://lnkd.in/eTZdG4ZpFrom IDScan.net's newest report:"Other key findings from the Special Report include fraudulent ID demographics. More than 72% of fake IDs used at automotive businesses list “male” as the gender, with less than 30% listed as “female” (IDs without a gender make up just under 3% of flagged IDs). More than 50% of these IDs list an age between 36 and 55, making middle-aged men the most common identity displayed on the identity document. Corroborating data in the IDScan.net 2024 Fake ID Report, Texas is the most commonly faked ID."https://lnkd.in/esbQdEmY
