The Manhattan Mercury from Manhattan, Kansas (2024)

(AP) The search for two escaped mental patients swung to San Francisco today after the release there unharmed of the last of four hostages and the recapture of one patient. Frank Svehla, 53, the last hostage, hailed passing patrol in San Francisco about a.m. He and three others were seized when the three patients fled Atascadero State Hospital MHS Graduates (Continued From Page 1). Steve and Patty felt high school students were better informed today.

"People really haven't changed that much," said Steve, "but they are becoming more informed and more interested about what is going on. As seniors, we are getting closer to the situation at hand." Patty thought this year especially, her fellow classmates were better informed about things. "Basically, my ideas haven't changed about many things especially political," said Patty. "But I have become more thoughtful in certain areas. There are a lot of things that I have opinions on which I didn't learn in high school." Patty and Steve did disagree on high school preparedness and then "Manhattan Vietnam "High was excellent in producing a wide academic program," said Steve.

"I feel I'm prepared for the future." However, Patty had a little different view. She said, "I don't think the preparedness was very academic, but it was real good in helping me get along with people. "People have different. political beliefs and this thing about diplomacy quite important." Patty felt the school was moving in the right direction academically. While not dwelling on manuevers in Vietnam, military said he favored the U.S.'s position in Southeast Asia while Patty had just the opposite approach.

After two long years as an underclassman it seems a short senior year for many students. "It's. been a long haul," said Steve in reference high school days. "When you're top man on the hill, being a senior, everything kind of blends together. You remember M-Club initiation, the band trips to Hutchinson and Topeka and then the sports." Faulkner, who was president of M-Club, a member of Hiand FCA, including a youth group at church, called religion an important part of his high school career.

Both students are planning on working in Manhattan this summer. It wasn't stated, but Steve and Patty are glad high school is coming to an end. It's been fun, but there are higher mountains to climb and deeper seas to cross. Economists Urge National System On Income Plans CAMBRIDGGE, Mass. (AP) A national system of income guarantees and supplements was urged today by more than 1,000 economists from 125 institutions of higher learning throughout the United States.

They emphasized that to be workable such a plan would have to be based solely on need and would also have to include features providing incentive for working and saving. Our present programs of public assistance and social i insurance exclude millions who are in need and meet inadequately the needs of millions more," the economists said in a statement. "All too often these programs unnecessarily penalize work and thrift and discourage the building of stable families," they added. The statement was originally sponsored by five well-known American economists: Paul A. Samuelson of Massachusetts Institute of Technology; John K.

Galbraith Harvard; James Tobin of Yale; and Harold Watts and Robert Lampman, both of the University of Wisconsin. Samuelson released the statement at a press conference at MIT. The television film began the second week of the trial of Spock and four codefendants on charges of conspiring to counsel young Americans to avoid the The government said the news conference, held at the Penn Garden Hotel, preceded an antidraft demonstration at the White Hall Street Induction Center in New York City, where Spock was arrested for blocking an entrance. Svehla is a psychiatric technician. The three, all with criminal records, armed and considered extremely dangerous, stabbed two guards, Sgt. Dave Baro Robin Moore, when they broke from the hospital 20 miles north of here. They took the wounded guards, Svehla and Mrs. Dorothy Warren, 40, also a psychiatric technician, as hostages.

Sheriff's officers, police and highway patrolmen threw. up road blocks throughout the county. Officers captured Robert Hig. uera near Pismo Beach, 12 miles south of here. Mrs.

Warren was released unharmed before the capture, the sheriff's officer said. With an all -out manhunt under way, he said, the three men holed up last night at a house in Los Osos, a community six miles northwest of here. The family returned home about 7:30 p.m, and was held hostage until about 9:15 p.m., he said. Then, the officer related, the men split up, taking the family's two cars. The family was not harmed.

Dr. Sterling Morgan, director of the hospital, said the apparent leader of the break a mentally disordered sex offender from Los Angeles named Gerard Gallant, 28, who has been convicted of armed robbery and rape. The other two, also from Los Angeles, were named as George Quinlan, 25, charged with kidnaping and shooting a policeman at Los Angeles, and Higuera, charged with theft and narcotics violations. Both had adjudged unable to stand trial because of insanity. Morgan said the break came after a disturbance had been reported in a ward.

A group of attendants was met by the three patients, armed with a pistol and two knives, herding the four hostages in front of them. Churches (Continued From Page 1) Rev. Simmons' sermon entitled "'That They All May Be One" deals with the question of denominational disunity. What does this do the church? "One minister told of a woman he visited often who had not been in church for ten years," said Rev. Simmons.

"The reason was not that she was too old or too sick but simply that she couldn't worship among divisions. On college campuses students are asking 'What's the sense to all these Christians talk about love while fighting among Rev. Simmons said the missionary movement has long experienced the divisiveness of denominations. "In India," he said, "some years ago some 500,000 untouchables as a group chose to become Buddhists rather than Christians because of Christianity's decisions." And Rev. Simmons said in Japan, Ceylon and Africa, people are confused as to who and what the Christian Church is, since there are so many denominations seeking their loyalty.

Rev. Simmons explained there were four things that can be done to prepare for Christian unity. "The first is to become acquainted with the ecumenical movement which is that movement in our churches toward cooperative action and Christian unity. "Secondly, study and know your own rich heritage and tradition asking what contributions it can uniquely make to unity. "Third, with openness, understanding, respect and love, learn of other denominational traditions.

Each has a major contribution to make to the Christian faith. "And fourth, not only are the churches divided, this division and disobedience comes from the division in each of our hearts. Each of us needs to be made whole and healed of our inner disunity. We must turn in repentance to Jesus Christ, who is the one who will make a disunited church one." A unanimous decision said "If there reasonably available other ways, such for illustration as zoning, promising speedier and more effective conversion to a unitary, racial school system, 'freedom of choice' must be held unacceptable." The decision further charged lower federal courts with retainjurisdiction in school segregation cases "so that the goal of a desegregated, non-racially operated school system is rapidly and finally achieved." The ruling disapproved the plans of New Kent County, Jackson, and Gould, school districts. Justice William J.

Brennan Jr. spoke for the court. Recalling that it has been more than a decade since the Supreme Court declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, Brennan said that in areas where there is segregation "the burden on a school board today is to come forward with a plan that promises realistically to work and promises realistically to work He added: "'There is no universal answer to complex problems of desegregation; there is obviously no one plan that will do the job in every case. "The 50 kilos you see are reserved for one of my best customers." It was one of the aggravations of the general strike that hit France early last week, but there has been no open panic because the fresh food channel -farmers, private transporters and grocers-kept working.

French cities were supplied with milk, vegetables, fruit and meat as drivers concentrated on perishable products. Still, some housewives started hoarding food and some items were hard to find in shops. On Saturday, for example, it was possible to buy beef, tomatoes or cherries in any shop one could hardly get salt, sugar, oil, canned food or even wine. Prices doubled or tripled in a week. Trying to force prices down, some angry housewives threatened to bring charges of black market profiteering against grocers as in World War If.

But there also were cases of price reductions for some perishable vegetables, such as tomatoes, when grocers saw they might have to throw them away. Where the rich hoarded, the poor had trouble obtaining food. In a plush western Paris suburb, one grocery customer blindly ordered food "for 100 while others waiting in line anxiously looked at their wallets. Formal presentation of the grand prize will be made on the opening day of the Chicago International Furnishings Market, June 16, at a special press brunch. The national competition for an imaginative design solution using carpet in an interior was open to young designers, practitioners and students, throughout the United States. The two runners-up were Linda Marie Umgelter of Los Angeles and Marciann Enos of San Diego. Two other K-State students in the Interior Architectural Design Option, Gerald Duane Harr, Wichita, and Jerry.

Brockleman, Council Grove, won first and second places respectively in the recent Knoll ssociates Design 2068 Competition. The competition, the design of a living area for the year 2068, included entries from eight major universities within the central states region. The two winners were submitted along with other entries from the interior design class of Kay Stewart, assistant professor of interior design in the College of Home Economics. The option in interior architectural design within the College of Architecture and Design is under the direction of Prof. Jack Durgan.

It was inaugurated two years ago on the basis of a cooperative effort between the College of Architecture and Design and the College of Home Economics, to meet an expanding need for specialization in the design of commercial and institutional interiors. other such products often were unavailable. Industrial goods were severely limited because of the strikes in the factories and wholesale shops. Public transport was dead. One Parisian doctor pointed to his empty waiting room and said people were not coming for medical care because they could not pay him.

Some doctors in industrial regions said they would treat patients who could prove they were strikers. The strike committees could deliver such proof. Because of the lack of public transport, persons not on strike drove their own cars to work. But as the days passed, most. gasoline stations closed because they were not supplied by the tank truck drivers.

By Saturday, it was impossible to buy gasoline in Paris except in filling stations reserved for doctors marked with red crosses and others reserved for drivers of food trucks. An absence of important panic reason was that for the electric plant workers, while on strike, did not cut the power supply as they have in the past. They apparently kept a power cut as a threat against the government in case negotiations come to a deadlock. WELCOME THEM -WARMLY A friendly call is always welcomed by newcomers to your neighborhood.
